Pipes Vs. Bongs

The pipe versus the bong. It’s a never-ending debate with smokers each having their own preference over the two. But which one is actually better? Are there really any big differences between the two? Let’s see how this debate shakes out below.

The Pipe

The classic choice that can be made from either clay, metal, ceramic, wood or glass and is defined as a tube with a bowl at one end and a hole to inhale marijuana through on the other. Compared to a bong, a pipe is smaller in size making it not only more portable, but more discreet as well. The smaller size also makes it easier and faster to clean. Pipes, however, do deliver a much hotter, and therefore, harsher smoke because the smoke has less distance to travel from the flame to your lungs and there is no place to cool it down. Again, due to there being no sort of filter in a pipe, you run the risk of inhaling ash.

The Bong

The popular choice in this day and age, bongs can be made from acrylic, wood, metal, clay, silicone or glass and are defined as a pipe that consists of a bottle or a vertical tube partially filled with liquid and a smaller tube ending with a bowl. Continuing to grow in popularity, bongs have a water filtration system incorporated which filters out a lot of the gunk you don’t necessarily want in your body without filtering out any of the good stuff. Plus, thanks to the chambered design, you aren’t going to inhale any of the ash.

While a bong may provide you a cooler smoke, it is a lot less practical. They are difficult to travel with because of their larger sizes and they need to be kept upright when there’s water in them. Due to the endless possibilities of the complex designs for bongs, the cleaning process can be a bit more complicated as well. Finally, while the water filtration system may be the greatest feature of the bong, it can also be the worst. Bong water reeks and if you knock over the bong and spill that water, it can be a real pain to try and clean the smell out. And when that bong water gets in your mouth as you are smoking… well we know how unpleasant that can be. Luckily, some bongs have built in splash guards to counter this.

The Verdict

So which one is better? Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference my friends. Both have their own pros and cons.
